Certificate of Music Educators
The Elgar School of Music is a registered centre for providing the Certificate of Music Educators which is accredited by Trinity College London. There are fewer than ten registered providers of this course and the ESM is thrilled to be able to offer some of the very best tutoring in the country.
What is the CME?
The CME is a new qualification for music educators working with children and young people in the UK. It is designed to enable music educators to gain recognition for their work while benefiting from opportunities to develop their practice.
How does it work?
Each learner completes a self assessment to map their prior knowledge and experience against the six units of the CME. From this starting point a personal action plan will be developed which will work out the required training and support to
enable the learner to meet the assessment criteria for the course.
Assessment
Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, including practical demonstration in the real working environment.
A Flexible Programme of Study
Each centre offers a unique Trinity CME programme, tailored to meet the specific needs of its learners. Study is part time and flexible, with training and support arranged to fit around the learner’s professional commitments, meaning that learners can continue with their professional activities while working towards the Trinity CME.Completion may take between 6 months and 2
years.
Who is it for?
The CME has been developed for anyone who works as a music educator with children and young people, including:
• Instrumental and vocal teachers working with music services, hubs, schools or privately.
• Early years and primary teachers.
• Community musicians and workshop leaders.
• Professional musicians who undertake education work.
What are the Units?
There are six units to be studied during the course:
1) Understanding children and young people’s musical learning.
2) Planning, facilitating and evaluating young people’s musical learning.
3) Reflective practice and professional development in music education.
4) Promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour.
5) Equality, diversity and inclusion in music education.
6) Safeguarding in music education.
What is required from our learners?
- A commitment to improving your teaching.
- An ability to work independently and creatively.
- Pupils who you can use for your assessment plans, and observations.
(NB we have a teacher training scheme if you do not have any existing pupils before starting the course.)
Fees
2018-2019
£850
Your fee includes all tuition fees, mentoring sessions and the £100 Trinity examination fee. Additional mentoring sessions may also be purchased. Payment of fees needs to be made upon enrolment of the course. Arrangements for paying in
instalments may be made through special agreement. Once fees are paid and a commitment to the course is made no reimbursement will be possible. In the event the course takes a student longer than one year to complete, fees of £240 will be payable for each additional term up to three extra terms in total.
